Have you ever wondered if your Work Requirement Statement (WRS) truly reflects what you do/are charged with doing? Have you ever asked yourself why it never changes? Have you ever thought that—much like your work which is evolving—that perhaps your WRS should likewise evolve? The WRS serves as the basis for your work and Employee Evaluation Report (EER). Much like any other aspect of our work, your WRS should be reviewed at least annually and revised to ensure its accuracy and effectiveness.
Remember that the WRS is the road map for an entire rating period of your work. When utilized properly (in conjunction with other tools), it should inform your work goals and greatly assist you completing your EER. A WRS Rating Planning Tool is located at the bottom of this page to assist you. By filling in the spreadsheet as you revise your WRS, conduct your initial counseling with your rater, and continuously update your goals and work throughout the rating period, this tool should serve to create an outline for your EER.
A couple of years ago, this job announcement for Pepsi’s VP of Global Security, a position held by Peter Bergin (former DSS Director) was posted. It’s worth reviewing the language used in the duty description. All too often, we accept the WRS given to us by our predecessors and do nothing to evaluate if it accurately reflects what we are doing or should be doing. Consider using this language (or at least its ideas) to rejuvenate your WRS. As we all know, virtually every WRS looks the same. If you re-define your WRS, so should your work be re-defined which in turn will set you apart. You will no longer be meeting and existing standard, but rather setting a new standard. Pay particular attention to the text that is italicized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Vice President of Global Security will:
· Manage a direct staff of nine and a total team of 65 security professionals, and will ensure that the team is working collaboratively to manage all security and risk worldwide.
· Define protection goals and objectives, evaluate current practices and develop a plan to enhance and manage the function on an ongoing basis.
· Develop and deploy an integrated security risk strategy and policies globally in order to protect the Company’s employees, facilities, assets and information technology.
· Identify measures to improve and ensure executive security.
· Lead, educate, coach and support business leaders, managers and front-line workers on security threats and the behaviors and processes that will mitigate these risks.
· Create a culture of risk awareness that empowers secure and safe behavior at all times and in all situations.
· Develop a proactive approach to employee and executive protection. Identify and mitigate risks to ensure a safe environment at all PepsiCo facilities worldwide.
· Work closely with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to direct all aspects of information technology security to safeguard the Company’s assets, intellectual property and computer systems. The CISO reports functionally to the CSO and operationally to the PepsiCo Business Information Systems (BIS) Chief Information Officer (CIO).
· Review, monitor and upgrade (where necessary) security at all PepsiCo facilities.
· Identify, evaluate and report emerging security threats to senior management and integrate counter-measures into the PepsiCo security strategy.
· Conduct investigations on current threats and on the overall strength and capability of the Company’s security strategy and policies.
· Direct and oversee security efforts for large events held around the world.
· Develop and maintain a network of third-party service providers that can effectively support PepsiCo’s needs around the world.
· Ensure that all security and protective activities (internal and external) are within existing U.S. legal and ethical boundaries.
· Ensure business continuity by evaluating risks and developing and implementing appropriate plans.
· Develop his/her team, with specific focus on developing an eventual internal successor.
YEAR ONE CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS:
During the first year, the Vice President, Global Security will be expected to accomplish the following:
· After a thorough assessment of PepsiCo’s current situation, modify the overall Global Security Strategy as needed to meet emerging and evolving geopolitical and other transnational risks.
· Work closely with the Security team to ensure effective management of the Company’s physical assets, employees and information technology.
· Work with regional Security leadership to evaluate the overall Security team globally. Recruit, train and develop a highly capable and proactive team that will be able to continually manage, assess and improve the security function.
· Develop a seamless relationship with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure a holistic approach to protecting PepsiCo’s critical assets.
